Editorial policy
Our guides explain a specific law in plain English. Accuracy matters more than speed, so every page follows the same rules.
Sources
- The enacted text of Public Act 104-0479 (HB 3564), which adds Section 35 to the Illinois Landlord and Tenant Act, is the primary source.
- Local ordinances (Chicago RLTO, Cook County RTLO) and related state acts are cited from official government pages.
- Summaries by Illinois law firms and REALTOR associations are used to confirm how the law is read in practice, and are named on each page.
- A fact that appears only in one secondary source, or that sources disagree on, is either left out or clearly marked as uncertain.
Review
Each guide shows the date it was last reviewed. We re-check pages when a trailer bill, court decision, official guidance or local ordinance changes the rules, and at least once a quarter. Changes that affect what landlords or renters should do are listed on the updates page.
Corrections
If you find an error, tell us with a source. We correct confirmed errors promptly and note material corrections on the updates page.
Independence
We are not a law firm, not a government agency and not affiliated with the State of Illinois. Nothing on this site is legal advice. Tools such as the fee checker match fees to the statute's categories; they do not replace an attorney's review of a specific lease.
Fee pages published by landlords
Fee disclosure pages under /f/ are written by the landlords or managers who publish them. We do not verify their content. Renters can report a page.
